or many women, arousal is understood only in the narrow context of physiological response to sexual stimuli. Yet “arousal” as a manifestation of watchfulness and awareness applies equally to other contexts in which submission also operates. In this project we seek to be constantly aroused and aware not just sexually but also emotionally, intellectually and spiritually.
Long-term participants often seek to comprehend how this relationship can be framed usefully. The experiences of some have lent themselves well to a series of reflections on the way in which our disciplines help shape our perceptions of ourselves and others and enhance the sacrificial pleasure that sexual submission in a context of spiritual awareness provides. One such woman is j.j., a 30-year-old unmarried participant, who wrote:
“I |
have recently wondered about sexuality and the relationships between arousal, clarity, praying with one’s body, awareness, continual prayer, and holy desire. I have asked why it seems as though so little has been written exploring these relationships. Praying with one’s body and maintaining an increased level of arousal seem to lead one to greater clarity and awareness of the way of things. This awareness opens one’s spirit and stirs one to love. Love leads to holy desire, which is continual prayer. It all seems to make sense to me and it all seems right and true. Yet, I can’t help but to wonder why this path is, at worst, rarely recognized or perhaps considered invalid, or at best, not celebrated on a large scale.”--jj
This sequences of pages explores the implications of following that path. Some of the language used in this section is frank and unapologetically sexual. If such language offends you please do not access these pages, which are for community members, all of whom are adult women, only.
